Ever wondered why there is so little media coverage of feminism? Or why so many people have either a distorted view of feminism or know nothing about it whatsoever? Have you ever felt misrepresented by the media as a woman?
Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner did. To answer these questions, they went behind the scenes searching for some answers. This is what they found*:
• In Rolling Stone magazine, 12 out of 13 of the top spots are held by men, 27 out of 28 contributing editors are men and the majority of record reviews are done by men.
• In Spin magazine, men have 7 out of 11 top spots.
• Vanity Fair magazine: 9 out of 11 top editorial positions are held by men.
• Harper magezine: 25 out of 30 contributing editors are men.
• Time: 8 out of 11 senior editors and 20 out of 22 senior writers are men.
• Newsweek: 19 of 25 senior editors and 13 out of 16 senior writers are men.
The list goes on and on. Take from it what you will.
*These stats are as of 2000.
