Why Feminism Matters

I think I have always been a feminist. It hasn't been until the last few years that I really took to that label.

Feminism, defined simply, is a political, cultural or economic movement aimed at establishing equal rights and legal protection for women. Or my definition: complete and utter empowerment of women.

I think my interest in feminism started with my sister's eating disorder back in 2007, an event that completely altered and changed me. But that is a totally different story for another day.

That event helped me realize how many women determine their entire self worth on the basis of men. So much of female insecurity comes from the fact that they think their body is not what a MAN wants. But seriously, is that any way to live your life? Worrying that your body doesn't match a man's expectations?? Who gives a fuck?

Easy for a lesbian to say. But just because I'm a lesbian doesn't mean I don't care what guys think. So this definitely applies to me too.

But as a lesbian, I can also say that I'm not attracted to one type of woman. I see so many gorgeous women in my day to day life I can barely stop myself from dropping my jaw and staring. And I'm not just attracted to the stereotypical girly-girl. In fact, more often than not, it's the wholesome, tomboyish, artsy, jock-like, androgynous or butch women that I fancy (any combination). And I know I'm not a guy, but aren't we kind of on the same level here?

So girls: I've got news for you. You are beautiful. Embrace it. Own it. Love it. Love yourselves. I know I do : )

So back to feminism. Feminism can be hard to define because the 3rd wave is so inclusive. Unlike the 2nd wave, it does not only welcome white middle class women. It embraces so many issues (the main issues being anti-violence, pro-choice-contraception-sex ed-stuff, gay rights, female self-esteem, and so much more. And that, in my opinion, is one of the beautiful things about feminism: it's open to your own interpretation and definition.

The most important issues in my mind are female body image and pro-choice stuff. And of course gay rights, but that goes without saying.

So why is feminism important? Look around you. See the change that needs to happen in the world around us. I'll let you answer that question for yourself.

And on a P.S. note if you're interested in learning more about feminism, some great books are Manifesta by Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards, Full Frontal Feminism, and No Turning Back.
