My Feminist Icon: Ani Difranco

Where do I start?

Born September 23, 1970, Ani Difranco is a singer/songwriter, guitarist, and feminist that has inspired and motivated countless feminists and musicians. Something about her fuck you do-it-yourself attitude that has made her such a phenomenon with young feminists, myself included.

In her own words, “I am not a pretty girl/ That is not what I do/ I ain’t no damsel in distress/ And I don’t need to be rescued/ So put me down punk… I am not an angry girl/ But it seems like I’ve got everyone fooled/ Every time I say something they find hard to hear/ They chalk it up to my anger/ and never to their own fear…”

Some major themes in her music include abuse, poverty, homophobia, reproductive rights, war, oppression of women, and self-esteem issues. In 1989, she founded her own record company (Righteous Babe Records), which has allowed her extreme artistic freedom.

In 2006, she was awarded the “Woman of Courage Award” by NOW, and has constantly spoken out about feminist issues both through her music and outside of it.

Listen to her song “Not A Pretty Girl,” one of my all time fav feminist-themed songs:
