Movie Review: Iron Jawed Angels

Summary:
Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and the women of the 1918 Womens Suffrage movement fight for future generations right to vote and run for office. Sacrificing their health, marriages and the limited amount of freedom they had, women were imprisoned and force fed after picketing and hunger-striking against war-time president, Woodrow Wilson; but survived to see the results of their efforts. –IMDB

Review:
First off, let me start by saying that Hilary Swank does a STELLAR acting job in this movie. She really captures Alice Paul as the devoted, determined, passionate, and smart woman that she most definitely was.

Secondly, I should definitely point out that this movie is very historically accurate except for one fictional character (the senator’s wife). Pretty much everything else actually happened.

The movie is VERY intense and emotional (I won't deny the fact that I cried a fair bit...). Very well done and well acted. 4.5 stars. I'd definitely recommend it.

  1. This movie was great, I think it helped raise a lot of public consciousness about just how brutal the struggle for something so basic was. It puts things into perspective for those of us who are still fighting for social justice beyond just the vote.

I posted on youtube the Mark Steel Lectures about Sylvia Pankhurst which I think are really important to watch to understand the international suffrage movement. I wish that Ida B Wells had been more included in the movie though just to make a political point about how there was division within the suffrage movement that was so unnecessary and kept it back. You can't really expect too much from HBO though :)
